Our Chapter

History of Duxbury Chapter, NSDAR

Duxbury Chapter was founded on November 27, 1954, by a group of women looking to promote the goals of patriotism, history, and education, serving South Shore communities in the tradition of the DAR.  The ceremonial flag used at the first meeting had been carried in combat in defense of our country in World War II, carried by the 1133 Engineers Combat Regiment in the invasions of Leyte, Okinawa, and Japan.   The chapter’s first officers were, Regent: Aura Davis, Vice Regent: Amelia Magee, Chaplain Florence W. Abbott, Recording Secretary: Helen B. Harriman, Corresponding Secretary: Irvina Alden, Treasurer: Marion Baker, Registrar: Bernice Shaw, and Historian: Winifred Couch. The chapter was presented with a book from State Organizing Secretary Mrs. Cunningham, which was signed by all the members and guests.

Chapter’s Historian was commended by MDAR for locating 305 graves (revolutionary and others), the most located by any historian by 1957.  In 1964, members gathered to celebrate our 10th anniversary, with eight members and nine guests. By 1974, the 20th anniversary celebration had grown with 39 members.  By 2004, our 50th anniversary, we had grown to over 45 members. The guest speaker was Mrs. Raymond Fleck, an Honorary President General, NSDAR.

Today

Our chapter remains vital and growing, with over 60+ members, and more on their way!  A diverse group of women, “daughters” in our chapter, range from college students, professional women, stay at home Moms, retirees, and two members in their 90s!  We are diverse geographically as well, covering the South Shore from Hingham, west to Middleboro, and to Cape Cod.

The chapter’s goal is to support the very same mission that began our DAR chapter, through patriotism, education, and history in a variety of service projects through the work of members doing a variety of things.   We support eight South Shore high schools with an active DAR Good Citizen program.  A student from each of the eight schools is selected to represent their school as a DAR Good Citizen winner.  In addition, they compete in an essay contest.  The last 2 years, our essay winner has gone on to become a state finalist in the DAR Good Citizen essay finals.  We support NSDAR scholarship programs as well.

Some of the service projects in our South Shore community include serving Veterans hospital, and womens and childrens area shelters.  Members have supported and participated in the Susan G. Komen walk for a cure. We actively support MSDAR with programs such as updating the state archives preserving our history, and NSDAR by supporting the President General's project “Open Doors of Hospitality” with donations supporting restoration of DAR’s historic facilities in our Nation’s capital.  Members are participating in Continental Congress, also held in Washington D.C. every year.

Honoring the service of South Shore Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, yearly events commemorating their lives are supported.   Prompted by our current State Historian member to celebrate our rich local historical roots, ranging from the Pilgrims and Natives (each with their own richly developed societies), and local participation supporting our Revolution, to the ship building and cordage industries of the 18th and 19th centuries.  Members have participated in the parades in Lexington and Concord on Patriots Day.

Monthly meetings are richly diverse with a variety of programs, often members sharing their own areas of expertise, interest, and background.  In the past year we’ve had programs featuring historical re-enactors  portraying Mercy Otis-Warren and Rachael Revere, an expert in identity theft protection, a program on Women in World War II,  women’s issues, and visited a member’s historical home.  Meetings thus are casual, fun, and really interesting!   We welcome all interested to contact our Registrar for additional information about our Duxbury Chapter of the DAR, or  the (Massachusetts) MSDAR, and National NSDAR .
